Alright, here comes another Seinen Hero proposal for a guy who I also think could be a Shonen Rival. I've been thinking about him for a while and honestly, I think he fits the bill for this archetype. Everyone, meet the immortal pirate skeleton himself: Captain Hector Barbossa! What's the Work?[]
Pirates of the Caribbean is an iconic live-action movie franchise created by Disney themselves. It's about a pirate captain named Captain Jack Sparrow and his loyal crew as they go on adventures to save people and stop dangerous villains who seek to carry out devastatingly heinous plans in each film of the series.
Who is He?[]
Hector Barbossa is the deuteragonist of the franchise. He is a former enemy turned friendly rival of Captain Jack Sparrow and the leader of his own crew of pirates who was originally a villain in the first film before turning good for the rest of the series by joining the side of good in the second movie and becoming an ally of the heroes.
What Makes Him a Seinen Hero?[]
Basic Traits[]
- Heroic/Anti-Heroic: He attempted to save his crew from a fate worse than death, prevented his daughter from becoming someone like him and sacrificed himself to kill Armando Salazar, saving countless pirates around the world.
- Apathetic: He wasn't bothered when his crew were devoured by sirens.
- Stoical: He mostly keeps a straight face regardless of the situation.
- Insightful: After his redemption, he accepts that he is a bad person and father before redeeming himself via giving up his life to rescue his daughter and defeat Salazar once and for all.
- Sophisticated/Mature: He is a very mature guy despite his occasional hammy lines.
- Pessimistic: He has a habit of hoping for the worst outcomes.
- Realistic: He values teamwork, loyalty and redemption.
- Strong Sense of Willpower: He refuses to give up no matter the circumstances and will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.
- Pragmatic: He kills villain rather than redeeming them because most of them are too evil to stay alive.
- Morally Ambiguous: Even after his redemption, he still does dumb things within his rivalry with Jack.
Bonus Traits[]
- Has Killer Instinct: He amasses a high kill count by leading an attack on Port Royal and wiping out a fleet full of ships.
- Has Bloodlust: He enjoys fighting and sometimes lives for the killing.
- Reckless: He puts himself in danger to save people on a frequent basis.
- Tragic Past: He tried to stop his crew from being cursed, only to get trapped in the fate himself, which caused him to lose his ability to touch things. When he got lucky, Jack killed him and left him dead for a whole year until Tia Dalma revived him. Even after being resurrected, he lost his leg and was forced by Salazar to sacrifice himself just to save his daughter, which led to his sombre death.
- Hard-Boiled: Due to his past experiences, he doesn't let anything affect him too much.
- Vengeful: He sought revenge on Blackbeard and Salazar.
- Has an Outfit with Black/Red/Blue: His outfit has a bit of black and blue.
