Shadow the Hedgehog is the secondary antagonist of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
He was voiced by Keanu Reeves.
What Makes Him a Seinen Hero?[]
- Heroic/Anti-Heroic: He risked his own life to save humanity by preventing the Eclipse Cannon from destroying the Earth.
- Cynical: For most of the movie, Shadow had an incredibly dark view on humanity and wanted to destroy them out of revenge.
- Apathetic: Despite not lacking empathy, Shadow is incredibly ruthless for most of the movie to the point of even initially brushing off his murder attempt of Tom to continue his revenge against humanity .
- Insightful: Is rather strategic when it comes to battle.
- Pessimistic: Thanks to his past, Shadow was incredibly grim and lacked hope for a better life, focusing solely on revenge.
- Strong Sense of Willpower: Despite being trapped for 50 Years in stasis, Shadow kept his resolve to avenge Maria.
- Pragmatic: Shadow was rather brutal when dispatching Sonic's gang and nearly killed Tom, even brushing it over initially to continue his revenge against humanity.
- Has Anger Issues: Is incredibly aggressive and irritable in general.
- Has Killer Instinct: Nearly killed Tom when he thought he was Commander Walters and even initially tried to justify this to Sonic despite his own hesitation.
- Tragic Past: Shadow has a sympathetic backstory. He was created by Gerald Robotnik and then became very close to his granddaughter, Maria. Later, when she was killed by a G.U.N. soldier, Shadow would then go on a vengeful path to destroy humanity.
- Hard-Boiled: Thanks to his backstory, Shadow became incredibly apathetic and grim.
- Vengeful: His entire motivation as a villain is on avenging Maria and one of his few comedic moments was even about him having "revenge guac".
- Black Hair: His skin is mostly detailed with black fur.
- Has an Outfit with Black/Red: Has black fur throughout his body along with a couple of red stripes.
- Is an Edgelord: While he has a few none detracting comedic moments, Shadow is undeniably the darkest villain of the Sonic Cinematic Universe. His attack on Tom is treated with a lot of gravitas by the narrative and while Tom survived, it caused him to require a cast even at the end of the movie. Furthermore, he nearly corrupts Sonic into Darkness with this evil act which no other villain manages to do. Additionally, Shadow is more heinous than the other two Game Changers, the Unnamed Echidna Warrior and the Buyer.
