James Hopper Jr. is one of the main characters of the Stranger Things franchise.

What Makes Him a Seinen Hero?[]

  • Heroic/Anti-Heroic: After fighting in the Vietnam War he worked as the Police Chief in Hawkins, he would go on to adopt Eleven in Season 2, gaining a sense of empathy and responsibility because of her. He also began dating Joyce Byers, and would regularly help out the kids with the various battles throughout the series, going so far to risking his life in Season 3 and personally fighting the Demogorgon in Season 4.
  • Apathetic: Despite being the Police Chief, he didn't care about his job, since he would regularly show up late and had a laid-back attitude and would show indifference to the most cases, although this would change after the disappearance of Will Byers.
  • Insightful: During his imprisonment in Russia in Season 4, he would reflect on his actions and relationships throughout the series.
  • Realistic: During his imprisonment in Russia in Season 4, he would tell the other inmates that they were only feeding them to make the Demogorgon stronger.
  • Strong Sense of Willpower: Even though he can have moments of pessimism, he gained a strong sense of responsibility and purpose through his relationships throughout the series, mainly with Eleven and Joyce Byers. Even going so far to go back to the prison he was being kept in to help the Hawkins Party.
  • Lustful: Before the events of the series he would regularly sleep with multiple women to cope with the pain brought by his daughter's death and later divorce.
  • Reckless: Seen through his multiple adventures with and without the kids, but showcased mostly in Seasons 3 and 4
  • Tragic Past: As mentioned earlier, after the death of his young daughter due to cancer and divorce with his then wife Diane, Hopper became emotionally reserved and cynical. He would regularly drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes to deal with it, he'd also developed an addiction to anti-anxiety drugs.
