Guts is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series, Berserk.

In Japanese, he has been voiced by Nobutoshi Canna and Hiroaki Iwanaga, the latter of which voices him currently. In English, he has been voiced by Marc Diraison in the 1997 anime and the animated movies, Michael Bell in Sword of Berserk, and Kaiji Tang in the 2017 anime.

What Makes Him a Seinen Hero?[]

  • Heroic/Anti-Heroic: Guts has shown to be very noble and is willing to save innocent lives, even if it is sometimes for his own survival.
  • Cynical: Guts is rather distrustful of people's intentions, specifically when it comes to those of high authority
  • Apathetic: Guts doesn't display much concern towards any situation unless it affects his comrades.
  • Stoical: Guts is an introverted person who rarely displays his emotions openly towards others and generally prefers to keep to himself.
  • Insightful: Due to his own experiences in the battlefield from a young age, Guts gives plenty of insight to less experienced fighters.
  • Pessimistic: Having bad luck, Guts tends to think negatively about the world.
  • Realistic: Guts doesn't care about ideologies and instead views any situation for what it is.
  • Strong Sense of Willpower: Guts refuses to back down regardless of his circumstances, even going as far as to refusing to surrender himself to the darkness.
  • Has Anger Issues: Due to his traumatic childhood, Guts has a hard time controlling his anger from time to time.
  • Has Killer Instinct: Guts doesn't hesitate to kill anyone without showing mercy.
  • Has Bloodlust: Guts sometimes takes pleasure in killing his enemies.
  • Lustful: Though he got off on the wrong foot with Casca, Guts becomes attracted to her to the point of having intercourse with her, and he's willing to have sex with an apostle to kill a member of them.
  • Reckless: Guts has a tendency of putting his own life in danger and getting injuries in the process.
  • Tragic Past: Guts was born from a dead woman lyching from a tree, forced into war as a toddler, suffered sexual abuse from his foster father Gambino and kills him in self-defense. This trauma causes Guts to become a lethal mercenary who seeks thrills through killing and prioritize his survival before anything else.
  • Has Trust Issues: After being betrayed by Griffith and losing his friends as a result, Guts begins to refuse to let anyone get close to him.
  • Hard-Boiled: After all the hardships he endured during his childhood, Guts rarely gets phased by the most horrific scenes that would easily traumatized a normal person.
  • Vengeful: Guts wants to seek revenge against Griffith for betraying him and the rest of the Band of the Hawk.
  • Black Hair: Guts has black hair.
