~ Felonious Gru. |
Felonious Gru Sr., better known simply as Gru, is the main protagonist of Illumination's Despicable Me franchise.
Once a supervillain aspiring to steal the moon, Gru would adopt three girls named Margo, Edith, and Agnes one day in an attempt to use them to retrieve a shrink ray needed for his plans. However, over the course of the movie, Gru would warm up to his three daughters despite initially seeing them as disposable and in the end, forsakes his plans for achieving villain stardom in favor of becoming a true father to them and starting a family.
He is voiced by Steve Carell.
What Makes Him a Seinen Hero?[]
- Heroic/Anti-Heroic: He used to be a supervillain who sought to steal the moon and eventually succeeded in doing so, but ultimately redeemed himself and did many heroic deeds such as giving up the moon to save Margo, Edith and Agnes from Vector in Despicable Me, preventing El Macho from taking over the world with an army of Evil Minions in Despicable Me 2, stopping Balthazar Bratt from blasting Hollywood into space in Despicable Me 3, and fighting Maxime Le Mal to save his son Gru Jr. in Despicable Me 4.
- Cynical: Gru's grumpy and cynical as a former supervillain.
- Apathetic: Despite redeeming himself and permanently staying a hero, he never showed remorse for any of his villainy or past crimes at all. He also continued to have his dog Kyle ruin his neighbor Fred’s garden even after his redemption, while Fred's his own dog was leaving "little bombs" in Gru's own yard, this is still unjustified.
- Insightful: As an adult, Gru stole the moon as a promise to his mentor, Wild Knuckles, as well as to try and impress his mother, who had been unimpressed by most of his accomplishments since his childhood.
- Sophisticated/Mature: Although Gru was sneaky and somewhat cold-hearted and didn't care about Margo, Edith and Agnes at first, he began to care greatly for his three adopted loveable daughters, becoming heartbroken when Dr. Nefario sent them back to the orphanage and risking his life to rescue them from Vector. He also genuinely cares for Dr. Nefario, the Minions, his wife Lucy, his brother Dru, his dog Kyle, and and his son Gru Jr., displaying high emotional maturity.
- Realistic: During the course of the first film, Gru realizes the importance of love, family and kindness through his adopted daughters, prompting him to change for the better.
- Pessimistic: Gru is shown to be pretty pessimistic at times.
- Strong Sense of Willpower: Gru is shown to never give up on accomplishing his goals or helping his loved ones. In the heroic actions listed above he was determined, as he risked his life to save Margo, Edith, and Agnes from Vector's ship and almost ended up falling to his death in Despicable Me, cured all of the Evil Minions and saved Lucy from a rocket that was to be launched into a volcano by El Macho in Despicable Me 2, went after Bratt after he kidnapped the girls in Despicable Me 3, and chased after Maxime Le Mal after he kidnapped Gru Jr. in Despicable Me 3.
- Pragmatic: Gru helped Poppy Prescott steal his professor’s pet honey badger as he didn’t want his true identity to be revealed in Despicable Me 4 while he and his family were hiding from Maxime Le Mal.
- Has Anger Issues: At first, he showed a dislike of children, as he was easily irritated by Agnes, Edith, and Margo in the first Despicable Me.
- Has Killer Instinct/Has Bloodlust: Even after redeeming himself, Gru is constantly a mischievous, thoughtless, and inconsiderate sadist, not hesitating in trying freeze Lucy with the Freeze Ray before even getting to know her and later freezing Antonio Perez for breaking Margo's heart in Despicable Me 2, and trying to kill Dru’s butler Fritz whom he barely knew and was just trying to talk to him in a missile that sent him far away before exploding in Despicable Me 3.
- Reckless: He repeatedly tried to break into Vector’s fortress and was always attacked by its security systems, and nearly fell to his death while trying to rescue the girls from Vector's ship in Despicable Me, saved Lucy from a rocket heading towards an active volcano in Despicable Me 2, with both of them being on the rocket which was blasting through the sky, and almost fell to his death while fighting Maxime Le Mal in Despicable Me 4.
- Tragic Past: Gru was separated from his twin brother Dru when he was a baby, constantly picked on by his peers in school, was isolated there just cause he accidentally touched a girl named Lisa when he tried to ask her out, and was raised by a cruel and perverted mother named Marlena, who had no regard for him in the slightest, which traumatized him and made him a villain.
- Vengeful: He froze Vector's head for being the one who stole the Great Pyramid of Giza and later threatened to hurt him for refusing to release the girls in exchange for the shrunken moon in Despicable Me, froze Antonio with the Freeze Ray as revenge for dumping Margo in Despicable Me 2, and challenged Bratt to a dance fight during their final battle in Despicable Me 3 to get back at him for getting humiliated during their first encounter early on in the film.
- Black Hair: He had black hair as a kid.
- Has an Outfit with Black/Red/Blue: He has a black collared coat, along with slim striped black pants and black boots.
