Clayton "Clay" Jason Jensen, is the main protagonist of the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why, and its 2017 Netflix adaptation. He was portrayed by Dylan Minnette.

What Makes Him a Seinen Hero?[]

  • Heroic/Anti-Heroic: Clay stops Tyler Down from creating a shooting at the school dance, saving hundreds of students as a result.
  • Cynical: Clay loses his trust in others to the point where he keeps secrets from his own parents.
  • Insightful: Clay advises his peers to treat each other with dignity and respect or history will repeat itself.
  • Pessimistic: Given how much drama is happening around the school and the disasters that occurred as a result, Clay has a hard time seeing the good in any situation.
  • Strong Sense of Willpower: Despite of the trauma he has experienced, Clay refuses to let his life bring him down into despair.
  • Has Anger Issues: Clay has his moments of angry outbursts, specifically when seeing Hannah's spirit.
  • Lustful: Clay was deeply in love with Hannah to the point of having intercourse with her.
  • Tragic Past: Clay developed strong romantic feelings for Hannah. After learning about her suicide, he sets out to seek justice for her. Additionally, the trauma of Hannah's death left Clay with a tremendous amount of guilt, especially after listening to her last tape, in which she talks about him as one of the reasons why she killed herself.
  • Vengeful: Clay sets out to seek revenge against Bryce Walker for raping Hannah and traumatizing her into suicide.
